China Gantikan Tokyo sebagai Tuan Rumah Pan Pacific Open

KOMPAS.com - Kota Wuhan di China akan menjadi tuan rumah baru untuk turnamen tenis wanita Pan Pacific Open mulai tahun 2014. Sebelumnya, turnamen tersebut berlangsung di Tokyo, Jepang, selama tiga dekade. Demikian dikatakan WTA Tour, Kamis (10/1/2013).

Ini tentu saja menjadi sebuah tanda bagaimana perkembangan tenis putri di China, negara dengan populasi penduduk terbanyak di dunia. Dengan demikian, "Negeri Tirai Bambu" itu akan menjadi tuan rumah lima turnamen tenis mulai musim depan, termasuk sebuah event baru yang akan dilaksanakan di wilayah administratif di Hongkong.

Saat ini China sudah bisa bangga karena jadi penyelenggara turnamen China Terbuka di Beijing, yang merupakan salah satu turnamen bergengsi WTA, karena hanya setingkat di bawah grand slam. Selain itu, ada juga turnamen Guangzhou International dan Shenzhen Terbuka, yang melakukan debutnya tahun ini.

Turname ini dilaksanakan di Wuhan, sebuah kota besar di China tengah, yang terkenal karena merupakan kota kelahiran mantan juara Perancis Terbuka, Li Na. Turnamen akan berada di level kedua dengan total hadiah uang yang diperebutkan sekitar 2 juta dollar AS.

WTA, yang sudah membuka kantor pusat Asia Pasifik di Beijing pada tahun 2008, juga sudah menambahkan tiga event lainnya untuk pengembangan tour di China pada 2013. Dengan demikian, ada enam tour yang akan berlangsung di negara itu.
